Walk and Work

My objective in creating and updating this blog is to chronicle my journey of building a treadmill desk, walking while working at my computer and the resulting weight loss.

I'm Back

So my treadmill died a horrible slow death. It started out with a low whine from the motor then progressed to a burning electrical smell after about 2 minutes then finally a thump, thump, thump, whack sound every three or four steps.

I looked online for a new motor but the cost of that and a new belt was over $500 so it was time to donate it to the junk yard for scrap metal.

Started saving my pennys and went out to costco and got the : NordicTrack Commercial ZS for $849

Threadmill Dr says : Our best buy winner in the $1000 range! This is essentially the Commercial 1500 from last year updated with a refined console and ifit capability. That was the one shortcoming of the 1500 model but our guess is that Costco will sell a bunch of these again this year.

So back and walking again!!!

really enjoying walking at my desk

I have really enjoyed walking at my desk over the last 6 weeks or so. I rearranged my office a bit to put a TV in viewing range which has been really nice for Sunday and Monday night football. I also play computer games and its great to know while I play games and watch football I can get some exercise as well.

I have been evangelizing the treadmill desk idea to some other folks I work with. They also work from home so I know they spend a lot of time in front of a computer and not moving around much.

Also got an invite to by Brad to join http://officewalkers.ning.com . Thanks Brad for the invite!

fell off the pace a bit

I had lots of phone calls last week closing out a deal and it limited my walking. The treadmill makes a low humming sound and it interferes with my phone and the other folks on the call say its a bit loud. Something to think about for those looking at building a treadmill desk. Listen to the treadmill prior to buying and judge if it will be distracting to you or others while working.

75 mile mark

Hit the 75 mile mark today and have walked the equivalent calories of 3.75 lbs. Clothes are looser and feel less bloated. I'm a good tired at the end of the day. My work is better and I feel more energized while I'm doing it. The technical writing part of my job is really flowing. I'm able to concentrate where before when I was sitting I found myself distracted by everything. I think its the movement. Slow and steady, rhythmic, the low hum of the treadmill not sure which or if its all of them. I guess now if I doze or lose concentreation I'll fall off the treadmill. :) All I know it's working and I don't think I'll ever, if I have the option, sit at work again.

Starting to feel it

I've been walking now for 9 days and am starting to feel the benefits. The energy from moving all day instead of sitting is awesome. 41 miles so far and counting

just keep walking .. just keep walking.. thanks Dori :)

Its been good so far this week. I have set up a small table and chair for when my feet really start to ache in the late afternoon and when I need to really focus on a conversation. I'm struggling to maintain some concentration on certain calls because of the noise the treadmill makes. Next treadmill the noise will be the main deciding factor.

Added a monitor stand

I added a swivel monitor stand today and my kvm switch to bounce between my computers. Leaves only my keyboard and mouse on the desktop so lots of room.

did 5 miles and 995'ish calories on day three .. this is crazy that i can walk this much and not even realize i'm getting this much exercise.
